Apple must allow operators other than France Telecom’s Orange to sell its popular iPhone mobile handset, the French competition regulator ruled Wednesday. The decision overturns an exclusive arrangement with Apple that has allowed Orange to be the iPhone’s exclusive distributor in France since the phone was launched last year.
An AT&T executive said last week that the company plans a “dramatic consolidation” of its mobile platforms over the years, leading up to 2014. The credible and likely candidate, he said, is Symbian. However, the decision doesn’t affect the Apple iPhone. This announcement says a lot about too much complexity and choice in the mobile phone market.

Profits at the three largest U.S. phone carriers are being squeezed by steep discounts on advanced cell phones, triggered by AT&T’s hefty subsidy for the iPhone.
