Zynga is spreading its wings beyond Facebook, the giant social network that made it a giant gaming network in its own right. Some 232 million Facebook users also use Zynga.
It has launched a new, independent gaming platform, Project Z. Other than the absence of Facebook, Project Z sounds as though it will operate very much in the same fashion as Zynga has to date.
Gaming fans pose two questions: First, "Why are Sony and Microsoft so worried about selling consoles? Can’t they just focus on games and online services?" and second, "In a world where digital media’s becoming popular, will online shops and downloads take down brick and mortar?"
Technology analyst Scott Steinberg answers a viewer’s question about Google+’s foray into social games: Is it really going to give Facebook a run for its money? In the short term, the answer is no. There are about 25 million users on Google+ versus roughly 750 million on Facebook, so when it comes to making money, there’s really no contest between the two.
Google+ challenged its top competitor Facebook on Thursday by adding games to the newly launched social networking site. Google has begun a gradual roll-out of the games, stating they should be fully available to all users soon. Google+ users will have a selection of 16 games to choose from at first, including the popular "Angry Birds," a top-selling application on several mobile platforms.
Video game analyst Scott Steinberg answers the question, "Why did EA buy PopCap Games, and is it a marriage made in heaven?" In a nutshell, Steinberg does see bliss ahead for companies, if EA can successfully integrate the PopCap "scamps," as he calls them, into its corporate culture. EA badly wants to expand into casual gaming, and PopCap has produced nothing but hits.
