The expansion of open source into new markets is prompting consumers to notice alternatives to traditional computing habits. Personal computing power now puts so much opportunity into the hands of consumers that previously impossible activities are possible without exposure to proprietary software.
Jim Whitehurst knows the highs and lows of running a corporation. Today he’s CEO of Red Hat, the open source Linux software company, where he’s flying high. The Raleigh company’s software is cheaper than proprietary products from rivals such as Sun Microsystems, which helped it post a 22 percent jump in revenue in the quarter that ended in November despite the recession.
Global shipments of personal computers posted their first quarterly decline in six years during the last three months of 2008 as consumers and businesses alike gripped their wallets in fear of further economic turmoil, a technology research group reported Wednesday. Framingham, Mass.-based IDC said worldwide shipments slipped 0.4 percent from the October-December quarter in 2007.
IBM said Thursday it plans to open a technology service delivery center in Dubuque, Iowa, creating 1,300 jobs in the northeast part of the state. Iowa Gov. Chet Culver is expected to join IBM and local officials at the announcement, which is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at the Grand River Center in Dubuque.
Google is closing three engineering offices and cutting 100 recruiters from its work force as the recession dampens hiring at the Internet search company. “Given the state of the economy, we recognized that we needed fewer people focused on hiring,” Laszlo Bock, a Google vice president, wrote in a blog posting late Wednesday announcing the layoffs.
Pricewaterhouse, auditors of the troubled Indian outsourcing giant Satyam Computer Services, said Wednesday that its audit reports for the last eight years relied on potentially false data provided by the company and should be disregarded. “Our audit reports and opinions in relation to the financial statements for the Audit Period should no longer be relied upon,” Pricewaterhouse wrote in a letter.
In this rapidly changing economy, enterprise executives are paying more attention to business processes that cost them less and deliver more results. The well-worn phrase “Getting more bang for less buck” is becoming the operative selling point for open source software products.
So far, the vast majority of press reports and blog posts coming out of the Consumer Electronics Show last week rave about Palm’s new Pre smartphone and webOS, the operating system that drives it. It’s a 3G phone that runs on Sprint’s network, has WiFi, GPS, 8 GB of memory, and all the standard stuff most expect from a smartphone these days.
One Laptop Per Child, a Boston-based nonprofit dedicated to providing cheap laptop computers to children in underdeveloped countries, has laid off 50 percent of its staff. That leaves the organization with 32 employees, all of whom have taken salary cuts in an attempt to cut costs, said Matt Keller, OLPC’s director of Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Circuit City Stores said Friday it is in talks with two interested parties that could buy the company or provide additional financing for it to stay in business. Circuit City, the nation’s second-largest electronics retailer after Best Buy, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in November.
