Just two weeks after forking over more than $1 billion to AOL for hundreds of patents and patent applications, Microsoft resold 650 of them to Facebook on Monday. Each party in this latest transaction will retain licenses to the intellectual property the other will hold when the deal is completed.

Demand for mobile devices is surging in markets around the world, and Research In Motion says it’s making headway in places outside of its native North America. “All the real subscriber growth is international,” said Maribel Lopez of Lopez Research. “You have to sell phones in India, China and other developing countries or you’ll miss the opportunity to onboard the next billion mobile users.”

Samsung appears to be lining up a major publicity blitz for the much-anticipated launch of the next product in its Galaxy smartphone line — the Galaxy S III. It has tweeted and blogged about an event to be held in London on May 3, where the device will be introduced. Samsung will launch the new device simultaneously in several countries with a multiplicity of wireless carriers.

The United States Department of Justice filed suit on Wednesday against Apple and several book publishers over what it claims is a conspiracy to raise retail e-book prices and limit competition in e-book sales. The defendants changed the business model governing the relationship between publishers from the wholesale model to an agency model, the DoJ alleged.
