Google’s bid to secure the digital rights to millions of books remains under attack from rivals and other critics trying to block a revised legal settlement that would unlock a vast electronic library. The opposition fired its latest salvo Thursday, the deadline for filing objections with U.S. District Judge Denny Chin in New York.

After a painful descent, things may finally be looking up for long-suffering Yahoo. Coming off its best quarterly performance since hiring Carol Bartz as its chief executive a year ago, Yahoo promised late Tuesday to deliver even more meaningful progress this year. For starters, the Internet company expects its revenue for the three months ending in March to rise 3 percent to $1.63 billion.

There’s an intriguing idea floating around the media: Microsoft wants to undercut Google so badly in Internet search that it might pay newspapers to withhold their content from Google. Just don’t count on that turning into a lucrative plan for newspapers. The unorthodox strategy faces stumbling blocks, starting with this one: Microsoft is unlikely to fund a Google boycott.

Yahoo will lean more heavily on Facebook’s popularity as it tries to give people more reasons to stay on its Web site. The expanded partnership announced Wednesday will enable Yahoo users with Facebook accounts to blend material from the two Web sites without having to leave one destination for the other.

A judge has given Google more time to revise a legal settlement that has drawn government scrutiny because it would give the Internet search leader the digital rights to millions of out-of-print books. Under a change approved Monday, Google and groups representing U.S. authors and publishers now have until Friday to change an agreement reached more than a year ago.

Google is buying mobile advertising network AdMob for $750 million, underscoring the Internet search leader’s determination to ensure its marketing machine reaches the growing number of people surfing the Web on phones. The all-stock deal announced Monday also represents the latest sign that Google’s leaders are feeling better about the economy’s direction.

With its stock in a three-year funk, Yahoo set out Wednesday to persuade investors that the Internet company’s struggles are nearly over. “We have fallen and we really want to get back up,” Yahoo Chief Executive Carol Bartz said as she kicked off an all-day meeting with financial analysts.
