Personal data about millions of Android users could be sent to a mysterious Chinese website thanks to a set of wallpaper apps in the Android Market. That’s according to mobile security firm Lookout, which discovered the questionable apps as part of its new App Genome Project.

Rackspace Hosting on Monday announced the launch of OpenStack, an open source cloud platform designed to foster technology standards and cloud interoperability. NASA is collaborating on the project. Rackspace is donating the code that powers its Cloud Files and Cloud Servers public-cloud offerings to OpenStack, while NASA will provide the technology that powers the NASA Nebula Cloud Platform.

Twitter has agreed to settle Federal Trade Commission charges that it deceived consumers and put their privacy at risk by failing to safeguard users’ personal information, the FTC announced Thursday. In what was the agency’s first such case against a social networking service, the FTC charged that serious lapses in Twitter’s data security practices allowed hackers to obtain unauthorized administrative control.
Apple’s App Store is not the wildly profitable operation it might seem, but rather does just a little better than breaking even, according to a recent report. In fact, the App Store has accounted for just $189 million — or about 1 percent — of Apple’s total gross profit since it launched almost two years ago, according to Piper Jaffray analysts.
Barnes & Noble on Monday rolled out a new, low-cost Nook device and lowered the price on the existing 3G-compatible version of its e-reader. Available this week, the new Nook WiFi device is priced at just $149. The price on the existing Nook 3G, meanwhile, was slashed from $259 to $199, making it the first under-$200 dedicated e-reader with both free 3G wireless and WiFi.
