Here in the U.S., iPhone owners still can’t tether their iPhones to MacBooks to get on-the-go Internet access for their Macs or PCs. They can’t do it for expensive monthly plans, nor can they do it via a new iPad-like pay-as-you-go option, either. It’s 2010 and there are two facts that blow my mind: The iPad won’t let you tether its data to a MacBook, and you can’t use your iPhone connection to tether to an iPad.
I’ve been relatively slow to embrace gaming on my iPhone and iPod touch. For starters, I don’t tend to have a lot of free time, and I’m lucky enough that I don’t waste a lot of time traveling, commuting, or otherwise standing in lines. But even I have enjoyed far too many hours blasting rag dolls out of canons and slinging angry birds at bad pigs.
Last week Apple CEO Steve Jobs fired off the equivalent of a backhand slap in the tech industry — an open letter, entitled “Thoughts on Flash,” describing why Apple believes Adobe’s Flash sucks. More to the point, Jobs made it exceedingly clear that Apple isn’t going to make Flash available for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad — not now, not ever.

While Apple announced more than 100 new user features for its iPhone OS 4 that will run on iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads this summer — in addition to adding 1,500-plus new Application Programming Interfaces for developers to make it easier to build cool apps — one new feature towers over all the others: iAd.
No doubt about it, the Apple iTunes Store is gorgeous. It’s packed with album cover art, subtle shading, and generally clean design. It boasts all the right elements — pictures, screenshots, customer reviews, ratings and plenty of drop-down menus. It’s got lists of popular songs, movies and apps. It’s got a search field, too. But in my mind, it’s all turning into a big, cluttered mess.

I’m still not personally sold on the idea that I need an Apple iPad, but I very much like what I’m seeing in the publishing industry in response to the fledgling product. Conde Nast is a respected publisher that’s looking to do something cool, new and proactive for its magazines — create digital versions that push the boundaries of digital magazine delivery.
I’m both irritated and pleased that Apple is waging a war on anything sexy in its iPhone, iPod touch, and soon-to-be-released iPad App Store. The company in Cupertino has been systematically removing thousands of apps that could be construed as sexy, have adult-oriented images, or just simply show chicks in bikinis — wait, now that’s a great idea for an app.
As the Apple tablet rumor frenzy blows way past the level of a fever pitch, I’m starting to reconcile myself with the notion that we may — within a few weeks — finally hear from Apple. The company is widely expected to make a public announcement Jan. 27 or so, though again, the expectation isn’t due to Apple, it’s due to a report stating the company has rented a space in San Francisco.
