Hundreds of thousands of Gmail users woke up Monday to find their emails had vanished and they had lost their contacts. Initial estimates put the number of people affected at between 150,000 and 500,000. Google’s support forums are inundated with messages from angry users. The Internet giant indicates on its Apps Status Dashboard that service has been disrupted for Gmail, but that no other Google apps are affected.

Salesforce.com released its Q4 figures last week, peppered with the usual positives: growth, acquisition, more growth, and so on. Specifically, the company reported that earnings per share were 31 cents on revenue of $456.9 million. Year-over-year revenue increased 29.1 percent. Much of the focus for the quarter — as well as the year — was on Salesforce.com’s enterprise social messaging application Chatter.
Looking back over the past few years, it seems like cybersecurity and warfare threats are only getting worse. We’ve had the Stuxnet Worm, the WikiLeaks affair, China-originating attacks against Google and others, and the recent Egypt Internet blackout. But are cybersecurity dangers, in fact, getting that much worse?
