Online shoppers took to their computers in droves on Black Friday, spending 11 percent more than they did a year ago and buoying e-tailers’ hopes for a bountiful holiday season. That’s according to a report released Sunday by market research firm comScore, which counted $595 million in online sales on Friday, making it the second-heaviest e-commerce spending day this year so far.

There’s an app for that, thanks to a Seattle-based startup that’s offering developers and consumers an X-rated version of a smartphone app store. MiKandi launched a developer’s portal last week with the express purpose of using the Open Handset Alliance to crack open the doors for what may be a very lucrative market for adult content.

Amazon’s e-reader device, the Kindle, experienced its best sales month ever in November, according to the company, which made the announcement even before Cyber Monday purchases were tallied. Amazon did not release any actual numbers to back up its claim, however. It is unclear whether it was taking into account Kindle sales made on Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday.

Yet the hospitals in the U.S. have largely underutilized the customer relationship management tools that could exploit the data in that customer base.

As enterprises seek to cut their total IT costs, they need to identify what legacy assets are working for them and carrying their own weight, and which ones are merely hitching a high cost — but largely unnecessary — ride.

What would the holidays be without bickering between siblings? AT&T and Verizon are swamping TV with ads attacking facets of each other’s wireless networks. While the ads stick fairly close to the truth, there’s a lot they don’t say. AT&T has been running ads with actor Luke Wilson checking off points in AT&T’s favor over Verizon Wireless.

As you begin your holiday shopping, remember that return policies vary greatly, even among products from the same store. For example, some retailers charge a 15 percent restocking fee on digital cameras and other electronics if the packaging is unsealed.
