The Obama administration is giving a jolt to the futuristic “smart” electric grid, hoping to more quickly bring America’s power transmission system into the digital age. President Barack Obama, during a visit to a solar energy facility in Arcadia, Fla., is announcing Tuesday that he is making available $3.4 billion in government support for 100 projects aimed at modernizing the power grid.

Fans scrambled to see 3-D movies such as “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs” in theaters this year, and new 3-D televisions could soon have home viewers feeling as if they’re surrounded by a spaghetti hurricane on their couches. Next year, major electronics manufacturers Sony and Panasonic plan to introduce 3-D-capable high-definition televisions for the mass market.

Google faces a new controversy in China after a Web site run by the Communist Party’s main newspaper accused the U.S. search giant of trying to keep Internet users away following its reports on a copyright dispute. The online People’s Daily book section said the three-day disruption began last Wednesday.

A federal judge has refused to approve a class-action settlement over contact information stolen from online brokerage TD Ameritrade. U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker in San Francisco says the deal offers little significant benefit to the more than 6 million current and former customers affected.

Technology entrepreneurs may understand the importance of protecting their intellectual property, such as trademarks and patents, yet many times they create startups without understanding what is involved in terms of protecting their business through other avenues — such as contractual mediums, which can be more important than the registration of a trademark or patent.

Coming soon to a Sony PlayStation 3 near you: the ability to shoot aliens and bad guys in a video game, then watch your favorite action movie star shoot aliens and bad guys in a videogame-like blockbuster film streamed via Netflix. The movie rental service announced Monday that it had partnered with Sony to allow PS3 users the chance to rent movies online via their gaming console.

There was a lot of news in the FOSS world last week, and it seems fair to say that the overall atmosphere was positive. First came word that a Microsoft-free desktop package is available for companies in the U.S. from IBM and Canonical. Then, from the ding-dong-the-witch-is-dead department, came news that SCO has fired its wildly litigious CEO Darl McBride.

It’s no secret: We just don’t watch TV commercials like we used to. We change channels, or, if we’re watching a DVR-recorded show, we skip over them entirely. Like everything else, commercials are migrating online. This brave new world of online commercials sometimes resembles the old TV model, but it has its own set of challenges and possibilities.
