In research conducted among over 200 companies in 2008 for a reported titled “B2B TeleServices and Appointment-Setting: Less Risk, Less Reward?,” Aberdeen Group found that end-user sales organizations relying primarily on external appointment-setting vendors for lead generation realized dramatically lower business results if the vendor deliverable was limited to simple appointments.

“The connected home” is a term used frequently but often defined ambiguously. Consumer electronics manufacturers, the PC industry, pay-television service providers and broadband providers are driving the development of the connected home, for obvious reasons, as the interplay of these elements expands the businesses for all these players.

The Los Angeles City Council voted 12-0 on Tuesday to adopt Google Apps, which include Gmail and other office software tools, for its 30,000 employees. The deal places Los Angeles among the vanguard of public sector operations relying on cloud-based productivity software. Plans call for installation of the system by June, when a pilot project will begin.

Consumers across the country soon will be able to find impartial information about out-of-network healthcare costs on a new Web site, New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo said Tuesday. The information will be collected by a new not-for-profit company, FAIR Health, in partnership with a research consortium based at Syracuse University, Cuomo said.

Fans of “Family Guy” are chortling about Microsoft’s belated discovery that a “Family Guy” special might not jibe with the software giant’s corporate image. On Monday, Microsoft said it’s pulling out as sponsor of a “Family Guy” variety show, just two weeks after announcing its sole sponsorship of the special, “Family Guy Presents: Seth & Alex’s Almost Live Comedy Show,” scheduled to air Nov. 8.

Colorado Springs is an interesting place. Despite the name, there are no “springs” — it’s an arid place in a valley surrounded by the southern Rocky Mountains and Pikes Peak National Park. The springs were an invention of the railroads seeking to establish a destination for vacationers. Good idea; it’s a nice place.

avweTalk that Apple is inching ever closer to making its rumored tablet computer a reality is making the rounds. In fact, Cupertino could sell more than 2 million tablets in 2010, according to the expectations of analyst Brian Marshall. Meanwhile, Apple should continue to gain strength in other areas with the new iMacs it introduced last week and the strength of its iTunes App Store.

Google announced on Monday that Google Voice users can retain their existing mobile phone numbers when setting up an account instead of having to receive a new phone number for the service. “Google Voice is all about enabling choice,” product manager Pierre Lebeau said in a post on the Google Voice blog.
