Xerox said Monday that it will buy Affiliated Computer Services for $6.4 billion in cash and stock. Best known for its copying and printing business, Xerox said the move answers a growing need to better link document management to the processes that produce them — including finance, human resources, transaction processing and customer support.

Big businesses often use big bucks to go green. Small businesses, on the other hand, haven’t a dollar to spare even for a good cause like saving the environment. Shouldn’t they just pass on the whole green scheme — at least until the economy improves? Not necessarily.

Some think of it as just an offshoot of CRM. Others view PRM, or partner relationship management, as interchangeable with sales force automation. The reality is PRM is coming of age in its own right, as manufacturers and technology companies struggle to manage their highly complex — and constantly shifting — channel partnerships.

With their advertising revenue drying up, newspaper publishers spent much of the spring and summer debating whether to cut off free online access to some of the material they run in their shrinking print editions. It looks like the talk will turn to action this fall, when some large newspapers are expected to put up Internet toll booths.

After much speculation, Twitter CEO Evan Williams confirmed on the microblogging site’s own blog that it has closed a “significant” round of funding. Williams didn’t cite the dollar amount, but it has been widely reported that six investors are prepared to pump close to $100 million into the company, giving it a $1 billion valuation.
