For six years, Uniloc and Microsoft have duked it out in the courts over charges that Microsoft infringed on Uniloc’s patent. A jury said it did and awarded Uniloc what was purported to be the fifth largest patent verdict in history. However, in a 66-page decision, Rhode Island’s District Judge William Smith overturned the $388 million verdict.

ATG has launched a program modeled partly on the now-ubiquitous app store concept and partly on the principle of open source code-sharing. The ATG Catalyst Program is an asset distribution channel for posting full-fledged applications or portions of code. ATG is kicking off the official launch of the site with ATG Mobile for the iPhone, a native software application built on the latest Apple SDK.

A voter advocacy organization asked the U.S. Justice Department Tuesday to undo the sale by Diebold of its voting machine business, saying the transaction promotes a monopoly. Voter Action, based in Washington, D.C., said in a letter to the department’s antitrust division that the transaction is a grab for market share.

Apple’s App store surpassed the 2 billion download mark this week, and now has more than 85,000 apps in the offering. Meanwhile, the iPhone is going into new markets overseas. Apple’s books could see a boost with new accounting rules, and there appear to be strong indications that Cupertino will soon introduce new items in its line of desktops.

I often hear people express fear at the “threat” of future regulation by a government agency. I have to admit I have the opposite reaction. As leaders in the world of e-commerce and online communication, we are in the driver’s seat to either show that we are serious about ethics — or that we need adult supervision.

Warner Music Group and Google have come to terms on a revenue-sharing agreement that will allow content from Warner’s full music catalog to be used in YouTube videos, according to a blog post by Chris Maxcy, director of YouTube partner development. Warner will be able to sell its own ad inventory and use YouTube’s Content ID technology to monetize videos incorporating its content.

Dell said Monday it will beef up accounting and corporate governance rules as part of a settlement tied to an investigation into its past financial practices. Dell, the world’s second largest PC maker behind HP, will also pay $1.75 million in legal fees, according to a settlement filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Two retired NFL players on Monday asked a judge to let them formally support a former college quarterback’s legal fight with video game maker Electronic Arts. Herb Adderley and Jim Brown asked U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken to let them file the legal document in support of former Nebraska Cornhusker Sam Keller, who sued EA and the NCAA in Oakland federal court last year.

Banks are backing off harsh overdraft fees and policies. That’s the good news. The bad news is they’ll probably look to make up that lost profit elsewhere. It’s a worrisome prospect for the vast majority of customers who never overdraw their funds and have grown accustomed to perks like free checking accounts.
