Dell’s second-quarter results reinforce what other tech heavyweights have shown recently about the health of the personal computer industry: It’s still wounded by the recession, but it is staggering back to its feet, thanks to consumers, bargain prices and little “netbook” laptops for surfing the Internet.

Congratulations, patient cheapskates: You’ve won the waiting game. Now you can get a well-equipped video game system for a somewhat reasonable price. The two most-advanced consoles on the market have dropped in price over the last few days, just in time for all of that back-to-school homework to get ignored.

Blockbuster and Samsung recently announced that Blockbuster OnDemand will be available on select connected HDTVs, Blu-ray players, and home theater systems starting in the fall of 2009. Samsung will offer connected Blu-ray players and home theater systems with both the Netflix and Blockbuster online services.

Back to school time is upon us, but it’s not just students who will soon be facing homework. Thanks to Thursday’s announcement that Microsoft is cutting the price of its high-end Xbox 360 Elite video game console from $399 to $299 — matching that of Sony’s new PlayStation 3 Slim — consumers will have to study up on which console now better fits their affordable entertainment needs in a down economy.

TiVo on Wednesday sued AT&T and Verizon Communications for infringing its patents, including one covering the ability to pause and rewind live TV. The DVR maker filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court in the Eastern District of Texas, seeking damages for past infringement and a permanent injunction.

Verizon Wireless is looking into ways to prevent subscribers without data plans from accidentally starting up the Web browser on their phones and racking up $1.99 in fees each time. On many phones, including ones on other carriers, it’s easy to inadvertently hit a button that brings up the Web browser.

LendingTree, which allows prospective borrowers to get quick offers from multiple lenders, claims Google is about to get into the same business. A LendingTree lawsuit against a separate technology provider claims that it has learned Google plans to launch such a service later this month or in early September.

Knowing Internet trend patterns is not enough. Small e-commerce companies have to be able to act on the information they obtain in order to capitalize on it. When they do not move quickly enough, they may find themselves on the tail end of a petering-out fad.
