Telecom giant Verizon’s second-quarter profits fell 21 percent from the same period last year, but much of the decline was attributable to charge-offs due to previous workforce reductions and deteriorating demand among business customers battered by the global recession. The company announced plans to cut 8,000 more jobs in the second half of the year.

It may seem that CSG Systems, a provider of customer interaction and billing management software, acquired marketing company Quaero in the nick of time. The deal was announced at the end of the year — just as it was becoming painfully clear that the recession was likely to be much deeper than initially feared.

Swedish wireless equipment maker Ericsson on Saturday said it had penned a deal to buy a majority of Nortel Networks’ North American wireless business for $1.13 billion. The Stockholm-based group said the purchase is on a cash and debt-free basis and covers the older CDMA and newer LTE wireless businesses of Nortel’s Carrier Networks unit.

The AP is moving ahead with plans for a system to detect unlicensed use of its content and potentially create new ways for the 163-year-old news cooperative and other media to make more money on the Internet. As part of a strategy approved Thursday by the AP’s board, the cooperative will start by bundling its text stories in an “informational wrapper” that will include a built-in beacon.

The would-be buyer of Web site The Pirate Bay backpedaled in a Dutch court Tuesday, saying that it is uncertain whether the purchase will ever be completed. Lawyer Ricardo Dijkstra said Sweden’s Global Gaming Factory X would only buy The Pirate Bay if it can turn it into a “legitimate business.”

Empty pockets and tight budgets are in style this season, but it looks like Apple missed the memo. The company reported an unfashionably prosperous third fiscal quarter, growing its revenue nearly 12 percent year over year to $8.34 billion. Its gross margins shot up to 36.3 percent, compared to last year’s 34.8.
