Alcatel-Lucent surprised its investors Thursday by posting its first profit since the company’s creation in a transatlantic merger in 2006, as gains on asset sales helped the telecommunications equipment maker’s bottom line. A Dutch court ruled Thursday that three men connected with Web site The Pirate Bay must block traffic between the site and the Netherlands within 10 days. Helped by deep cost cuts, Motorola on Thursday posted an unexpected profit for the second quarter after several quarters of losses, and said it expected things to keep improving this year. While sales continued to decline from last year, Motorola said the cost cuts, including 8,000 layoffs so far this year, set the stage for a comeback from its long-suffering cellphone unit.
Today’s revenue cycle is broken. Sales reps spend half their time cold-calling leads instead of interacting with interested prospects, while marketing invests its shrinking budget on costly programs and prospect lists that yield low conversion rates. The two departments seemingly operate in separate silos, interacting only when a lead is handed off from marketing to sales.
